Zimmerman, David A. “The Financier and the Ends of Accounting.” Panic!: Markets, Crises, and Crowds in American Fiction Cultural Studies of the United States. Chapel Hill: U of North Carolina P, 2006 191-222 Examines The Financier as a fictional biography of Charles T. Yerkes and also in terms of its structure, posing a question that many readers have asked since the original version of the novel was published: why was the 1911 version of the novel so long, repetitive, and padded with seemingly unnecessary detail? The author concludes that Dreiser was attempting to subvert the prototypical novel of its type (financial biography, or biographical fiction), in which a moral lesson is to be learned from a financier’s rise or fall. Instead, Dreiser uses the financial panic (“an exemplary naturalist drama”) which causes events leading to Cowperwood’s downfall and the story of Cowperwood’s machinations and fortunes to demonstrate natural laws and sociological truths. A revised and expanded version of the author’s “The Financier and the Ends of Accounting” (Dreiser Studies, 2004).
